Away We Go

Looking forward to a weekend away at Shelter Island, since next week will be an exceptionally busy one with the Spring 2015 Runway Show preparations. On the agenda: diving into this book of short stories, Emerald City, by one of my favorite writers, Jennifer Egan; spending time with the family, always a treat; throwing on the Geo Print sleeveless top from our upcoming Winter collection, probably with cargo pants, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and some Bobbi Brown pot rouge for color; and listening to a selection of potential songs for the Runway next weekend… hope you will watch it live, Saturday September 6th 1:00 pm here at rebeccataylor.com.

Nolita: Charm Central

In the heart of downtown NYC, Nolita is a neighborhood steeped in tradition with an entrepreneurial spirit, revealing itself with its innovative shops and lively restaurants. Its streets are meant to be strolled, hidden pockets waiting to be discovered; parks to slip into and escape the city for a moment, outdoor cafes prime for people watching. You’ll see locals walking dogs giving directions to tourists, shoppers with newly-found treasures, and hear laughter spilling out from bars and restaurants. A guide to some of our favorite spots.

The Butcher’s Daughter. Sunny vegan juice bar and cafe. Bring a book and stay a while. 166 Elizabeth Street.

A.B Biagi Amanda from the Nolita boutique is obsessed with the pear sorbet at A.B Biagi. 235 Elizabeth Street.

Crosby Street Hotel. Whimsical decor with an English flair, lovely spot for afternoon tea or a cheerful happy hour in its brightly lit and colored bar. Rebecca is quite fond of the White Linen drink, Deanna and Noelle are rosé all the way. 79 Crosby Street.

Café Gitane is a neighborhood standby popular with models off-duty and Aussies missing their Vegemite. People-watching paradise. 242 Mott Street.

Public. Enchanting ambiance with open air dining, seductive lighting and a loosely-based library theme. Sophisticated without being stuffy. Ideal for date night. 210 Elizabeth Street.

Calm within Chaos

I’m sure many women feel overwhelmed with demands and pressures, whatever they may be; yet I’m sure we all have pleasant spots of the day which place the pressures in perspective, often metaphorically so. Personally, I cherish my time in Shelter Island and the peaceful moments such as watching the waves wash over the pebbles. I also have a new puppy Chewy, which although he has boundless energy, he instills in me a feeling of calm.

We have a new print for Fall which I love: the White Noise print. It’s inspired by the energy of the city and modern life; technology, constant communication of competing frequencies, and the luxury of having a clean space where you can zone out, in peace.

The Grey Gardens Top

I’m obsessed with the Grey Gardens print so much I’ve designed jackets, dresses and tops with it, and it graces all of the fabrics so beautifully. This particular top is a light summer style with a slim fit and I love it paired back to my trusty cargo pants, a bright lip and nail, and some simple jewelry.

White Linen

Out on date night at the refined, cozy Crosby Street Hotel I ordered this cocktail - White Linen - and was delighted.   A refreshing taste and the froth is fun. It’s something special.   The ingredients are: Hendricks gin, cucumber, egg white, lemon juice, sugar, cracked black pepper.

Marco’s

For a great Brooklyn dining experience, I’d recommend Marco’s in Prospect Heights — it’s rustic yet refined and if the weather holds out, there is a lovely patio.  It is from the same owners as Franny’s one of my favorite restaurants!

J’Adore: Florals

I am in love with the Embroidered Floral Top from our new collection —- I love to take a comfortable silhouette and add couture-like details to make it look and feel luxurious. The light color is luminous and feminine and is wonderful to show jewelry - I styled with a family heirloom bracelet from my grandmother and necklaces designed by my sister, Victoria Tory & Co. I love this top with the Indian Floral Print pant (if I could be transported back to any time it would be Portobello market, London, early 70’s) and with leopard Saint Laurent sneakers (love to mix prints!).

J’Adore: The Embellished Runway Dress

A favorite dress at the Spring 2014 Runway show that is getting a lot of attention editorially in magazines, this dress shines during the day in real-life too. It’s a style that can be dressed down with a classic denim jacket and trainers, or brings the femininity (and fun) to a special occasion. On the runway we layered it over a crisp white shirtdress.  I love to see how our ladies style this!

The History of Love

Just finished reading this amazing book, The History of Love by Nicole Krauss… it’s richly romantic but with some beautiful yet bitter bits… here is a sample passage I love:

“She was gone, and all that was left was the space you’d grown around her, like a tree that grows around a fence. For a long time, it remained hollow. Years, maybe. And when at last it was filled again, you knew that the new love you felt for a woman would have been impossible without Alma. If it weren’t for her, there would never have been an empty space, or the need to fill it.”
