Inspiration: Aunt Bridget

In addition to my mother, I’m lucky enough to have another creative, independent woman in my family:  my Aunt Bridget.  As a young woman, she moved from New Zealand to London in the 60’s to train with the Royal Ballet and was truly a woman who embraced the time with style and grace.  As she told me, “there were so many excuses for dressing up:  premier parties,  cocktails on the lawn with Princess Grace and Prince Ranier followed by BBQ on the hills above Monaco at Nureyev’s villa.”  She shopped at Carnaby Street, King’s Road, Biba, Kensington Church street; and was always surrounded by enthusiastic, creative people.  An amazing woman, a huge inspiration!

Corrine Day
One of my favorite fashion photographers from the 90’s - hugely influential - was Corinne Day.  She passed away way too young, too early, but happy to know about the  upcoming exhibition celebrating her work. Photo above… George Clements looking through window.
May the Circle Remain Unbroken, until 23 November at the Gimpel Fils Gallery in London.

More is More

Name:  Vien Le Wood, embroidery designer at Rebecca Taylor

From:  London

Favorite piece from this season:  Sequin print dress

Most unusual embellishment used:  at university, I embellished pieces of toast with seeds and beads for a country rustic themed project that i laid out in a lunch box.  I also knitted swatches out of grass

Longest time spent on an item:  Six months embellishing a fountain dress, inspired by the quarry moss gardens at Belsay Hall.  I created an encrusted organic fountain dress where water trickled from the neck, eroding and rusting the materials.  Over time, algae formed so it related back to the garden.

Listening to:  At the moment I’m really loving grave wave:  lo-fi goth-electronica music that’s a bit dark, but dancey!

Grimes:  Oblivion

John Talabot:  Destiny

Zola Jesus:  Hikikomori
