In The Lab: Growing Crystals

Growing up in New Zealand, I learned to be very crafty because I had to: if I wanted a pair of red patent leather pumps, the only way I’d get them would be by painting one of my pair with red nail polish. I’ve always found crystals to be beautiful and almost magical and I was reading a book about mining and our head designer Kathleen came across this artist who transforms materials by growing crystals: we decided to try it with this clutch.

Ya Gotta Have Art

I love thinking about how at any one time, there are always amazing exhibitions going on—- I’m making it a point to see as much art as I possibly can. A quick snapshot:

Like Fine Wine
Like a true creative genius and style icon, David Bowie has quietly and surprisingly released a new single and video from his upcoming album, on his birthday, and I couldn’t be happier..anyone who knows me knows what a huge inspiration he is for me. I did meet Mr. Bowie once and was overcome with nerves —-couldn’t believe he was there in front of me… the voice…the eyes…the legend, David Bowie. Looking forward to everything he has coming up: the album, the videos, and hopefully, the tour! xx rt

Flights of Fancy
Artist Elle Muliarchyk has created a spectacular installation in our Madison Avenue store. Giant origami cranes preen in the windows, a beautiful flock of origami cranes are aflight in the store and festively lit for the holidays. Inspired by Elle’s well-travelled life and a Swedish fairy tale called The Wonderful World of Nils, the project was created in collaboration with Alicia McDaid of Garage magazine.
On the back wall, Elle’s film of 100s of birds is projected beautifully flying in formation. Magical, playful; this installation represents freedom and transformation.

Something Special

Vale Jewelry and Rebecca Taylor have collaborated on some unique jewelry pieces, available in stores and on rebeccataylor.com.  Thoughts from Vale jewelry designers Eva and Ava Bai, above:

About Accessorizing:

It should be fun and easy.  We are strong believers in not letting your jewelry “wear you” but love when our jewelry become “personal pieces” - jewelry that our clients hardly ever take off, that they almost consider a part of themselves.

Inspirations:

Travel:  we travel often, and extensively.   New York, artists, Kate Moss, Lauren Hutton and the modern woman we design for:  a woman who enjoys classic as well as edgier styles, but ultimately has fun with fashion.
