Birds of a Feather

While home in New Zealand, I visited with Niels Meyer-Westfeld —- an artist and husband of a dear friend Deborah. Niels is working on a book about New Zealand birds and his workplace is a charming studio in Wellington with an inspiring view of the ocean. I love the detail in his pictures and can’t wait to see them compiled in the final book…

Inspiration: Aunt Bridget

In addition to my mother, I’m lucky enough to have another creative, independent woman in my family:  my Aunt Bridget.  As a young woman, she moved from New Zealand to London in the 60’s to train with the Royal Ballet and was truly a woman who embraced the time with style and grace.  As she told me, “there were so many excuses for dressing up:  premier parties,  cocktails on the lawn with Princess Grace and Prince Ranier followed by BBQ on the hills above Monaco at Nureyev’s villa.”  She shopped at Carnaby Street, King’s Road, Biba, Kensington Church street; and was always surrounded by enthusiastic, creative people.  An amazing woman, a huge inspiration!

Street Art
I’m always so inspired by the creativity at street level:  not only street style, but art as well.  New York has been treated to some wonderful new street art via Banksy recently, and last time I was Paris I was lucky enough to run into some works by Phillippe Baudelocque- my favorite street artist.

Corrine Day
One of my favorite fashion photographers from the 90’s - hugely influential - was Corinne Day.  She passed away way too young, too early, but happy to know about the  upcoming exhibition celebrating her work. Photo above… George Clements looking through window.
May the Circle Remain Unbroken, until 23 November at the Gimpel Fils Gallery in London.

Modern Romance: Black Tie

Paris is my absolute favorite city in the world and a constant source of inspiration for me —- it seems like there is something extraordinary around every corner!  Here are some pictures from my travels to Paris of modern, feminine beauty which caught my eye.   I love the Pyramide du Louvre —- its classic, romantic architecture and clean, sharp details.  I often referenced this while designing the Black Tie Collection, strived to achieve that balance of beauty, grace and romanticism with a modern edge.

With Black Tie, I designed the silhouettes modern and added details elaborate and intricate—working with fabrics like lace, leather, chiffon and embellishments including tiger’s eye pearls, sequins and nailheads.  It was a dream come true to be able to let go creatively and design some couture-like pieces for the woman with an elevated taste yet who lives in the contemporary world.  I hope you enjoy these pieces and have a fantastic time in them.  xx rt

Carlotta Manaigo

People who know me well know that one of my favorite quotes is from Roald Dahl:

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.  Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it."

When choosing a photographer for our Fall 2013 campaign, it was important to select a photographer who can take an amazing fashion picture, and I also wanted a photographer who can see the magic… when I saw Carlotta’s portfolio, I fell in love with her sensibility.  As she describes her artistic inspiration:

With my camera, with my eyes, I tend to capture what I feel rather than what I see,
creating emotional states. Someone once described my work with the expression
"cold romanticism" which I believe conveys well the contrast within.
My inspiration comes from a fascination with nature in all its form, its game of light and shadows, its wilderness and fragility, sensuous aspects and mysteries.
It’s almost magical when such beauty is revealed.

With Glittering Eyes: Paris and London

I recently took an inspirational trip to Paris and fell in love with the beauty of the city all over again:  The Musee d’Orsay takes my breath away, there are always exciting new artists to discover in museums (this time I learned of Armand Berton and Francois Petrovich) and found myself always looking up with wonder:  the blue ceiling with gold stars at St. Germain Des Pres, and the beautiful ship chandelier at my favorite shop in Paris, Astier de Villate.  Everytime I go to Paris I find something new, and this time it was this lovely candy store, Meert.

London always provides a creative spark and this time I went with a purpose … to see the David Bowie Exhibition at the V & A Museum, which raised the bar on museum exhibitions and literally left me breathless, I thought I would faint… the man is a genius! I also managed to shop, of course, and visited one of my favorite stores, Dover Street Market.
