Bill Cunningham: Facades

Legendary New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham is showing a series of photographs documenting fashion in the city at the New York Historical Society, a must-see exhibition.  Mr. Cunningham is such a gentleman and so passionate about fashion, photography, culture, people; he is one of the original ‘street style’ photographers.  His “On The Street” feature in the Sunday New York Times is always such a joy.  (One of my favorite “New York” moments was picnicking in Battery Park with my husband in the 90’s, and being approached by this kind man asking to take our photograph, I don’t think we made the paper but it’s a photograph I wish I had today!)

Slow Dance: Lykke Li

A friend of mine announced she was having a slow dance party (fantastic idea) and wanted suggestions for songs… first song that came to mind was “Careless Whisper”, a personal favorite from days gone by, but I looked up some modern slow dance songs and I found this Lykke Li gem.  I love the video as she dances by herself.  We created our own Slow Dance playlist on rTunes (on the right column, at the bottom). Enjoy!

Required for slow dancing: a beautiful dress!

The Hair Force

Good hair can make or break a shoot so we love to work with the best ones available: one of our favorites is Rolando Beauchamp who created the hair for the Spring 2014 Campaign. For the “Urban Canvas” campaign I imagined a girl around town, effortlessly cool, expensive taste, but “effortless” hair for a shoot can be a difficult look to create! Here is how Rolando did it:

Manon has wavy / curly hair, he blew her hair out using the Bumble and Bumble Styling lotion and a Mason Pearson Brush, created a messy center part, used the Oribe Dry Texturing Spray and created texture with my fingers here and there and tucking some hair behind the ears, pulling some out. At the very end, Bumble and Bumble “Does it All” spray. Very important, once the texture is achieved do not brush it again, you will lose everything you just created! Cool girl/effortless style tip: If you’re putting on a coat, don’t pull out your hair —- hair tucked inside clothing is a great look!

Party Girl: Spring 2014 Runway Makeup

For the Spring 2014 Show, I liked the idea of a girl who partied the night before and didn’t bother taking her makeup off afterwards. I usually like the girls to look a bit tough, very downtown. (The hair had a grunge feel but still quite polished, so we could go stronger on the make-up.)   I worked with long-time collaborator, the creative, talented makeup artist Sil Bruinsma, and below are his notes for those looking to create the effect themselves:

Skin is left quite bare, just a bit of concealer where necessary. Eyebrows are strong and on the darker side using TAUPE. The focus is really on the eyes; dark, kohl rimmed and smudged, in EBONY and PRUNELLA pencil. A smear of MIX MEDIUM on the lids and a dab of concealer on the lips finish of the look.

-Use a lighter to warm up your pencil before applying kohl on the waterline, it will stick better and glide on thickly.

-For a real smoldery effect use a black pencil inside the eye and a deep plum or brown/bronze around the eyes. Smudge out with a q-tip. The two tones create extra depth.

-Don’t be too delicate when applying mascara, really work mascara into the root of the lashes and wiggle over bottom lashes, a little residue on the skin is nice actually and gives a slept-in effect.

-I prefer NOT to curl lashes when I do a tough girl look like this. It just looks cooler.

skin:
MAC Matchmaster Foundation
MAC concealer
MAC Blot Powder

brows:
MAC brow pencil in TAUPE or LINGERING

eyes:
MAC eye pencil in EBONY and PRUNELLA
MAC studio sculpt shade and line in EBONY
MAC mix medium shine
MAC mascara ZOOMLASH

Peter Lindbergh
If you’re in Los Angeles you should definitely stop by the Fahey Klein Gallery to see the Peter Lindbergh exhibition … one of my favorite photographers, his photographs of women are strong, cool, classic.
