The Uncommon Reader
My friend Robbie gave me The Uncommon Reader by Allan Bennett as a gift and I love to gift it as well. It’s a delightful novella that poses a scenario: Queen Elizabeth, at the age of 70, suddenly becomes a voracious reader. She starts reading out of duty, then finds duty turns to curiosity, and curiosity to pleasure:
“What she was finding also was how one book led to another, doors kept opening wherever she turned and the days weren’t long enough for the reading she wanted to do.”
Alan Bennett’s writing is such a joy to read, The Uncommon Reader is a witty tale of the subversive pleasures of reading. Treat yourself to this little treasure of a book!
