Woman We Love: Kate Bush

I’m already regretting I didn’t make it to London this summer to see Kate Bush, an idol of mine, as her rare concert series came to a close last night. Such a wonderful woman: “We’re all really sad as it’s the last night,” she told the audience. “I’m going to miss everyone so much.”

As a girl I loved listening to The Whole Story and it still resonates to this day. I read an article in The Guardian which articulates my appreciation for her: She’s a one-off, a prodigy, a creative heatball, an experiment of the species – dazzlingly successful but unreplicable. Her lyrical romanticism is questing and ambivalent, rather than needy and predictable. Her voice is wild, her melodies only make sense when you submit to them. Humming “The Man With the Child in His Eyes…

Chris Stein / Negative

I’m so excited about this book of photographs from Blondie’s Chris Stein. I’ve always been fascinated by New York’s music scene in the 70’s and 80’s and Debbie Harry is an idol of mine - beautiful voice, amazingly photogenic, and the essence of downtown cool.

Pulp: A Film about Life, Death & Supermarkets

So excited about this documentary of Pulp, a britpop band. Lead singer Jarvis Cocker is such a wit and an amazing entertainer, as he says in the trailer: “People say ‘what goes on in your mind whilst you’re onstage?’ The great thing is nothing’s going on at all, you get to lose yourself a bit.”

Inspiration: Debbie Harry
I love the rock and roll downtown style of New York in the early 80’s…I just love the anarchy of the time, and I imagined my Fall 2013 girl coming home late at night from a rock concert: feminine, with an urban edge,  maybe her boyfriend’s jacket around her shoulders.  There’s a little bit of Debbie Harry in every collection I do, probably because as a girl I stared at this Autoamerican cover for hours…

Like Fine Wine
Like a true creative genius and style icon, David Bowie has quietly and surprisingly released a new single and video from his upcoming album, on his birthday, and I couldn’t be happier..anyone who knows me knows what a huge inspiration he is for me. I did meet Mr. Bowie once and was overcome with nerves —-couldn’t believe he was there in front of me… the voice…the eyes…the legend, David Bowie. Looking forward to everything he has coming up: the album, the videos, and hopefully, the tour! xx rt

More is More

Name:  Vien Le Wood, embroidery designer at Rebecca Taylor

From:  London

Favorite piece from this season:  Sequin print dress

Most unusual embellishment used:  at university, I embellished pieces of toast with seeds and beads for a country rustic themed project that i laid out in a lunch box.  I also knitted swatches out of grass

Longest time spent on an item:  Six months embellishing a fountain dress, inspired by the quarry moss gardens at Belsay Hall.  I created an encrusted organic fountain dress where water trickled from the neck, eroding and rusting the materials.  Over time, algae formed so it related back to the garden.

Listening to:  At the moment I’m really loving grave wave:  lo-fi goth-electronica music that’s a bit dark, but dancey!

Grimes:  Oblivion

John Talabot:  Destiny

Zola Jesus:  Hikikomori

Now available:
