Carlotta Manaigo

People who know me well know that one of my favorite quotes is from Roald Dahl:

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.  Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it."

When choosing a photographer for our Fall 2013 campaign, it was important to select a photographer who can take an amazing fashion picture, and I also wanted a photographer who can see the magic… when I saw Carlotta’s portfolio, I fell in love with her sensibility.  As she describes her artistic inspiration:

With my camera, with my eyes, I tend to capture what I feel rather than what I see,
creating emotional states. Someone once described my work with the expression
"cold romanticism" which I believe conveys well the contrast within.
My inspiration comes from a fascination with nature in all its form, its game of light and shadows, its wilderness and fragility, sensuous aspects and mysteries.
It’s almost magical when such beauty is revealed.

Stars and Stripes

I love this photo of my son Charlie, enjoying cotton candy to brighten up a cloudy day on Shelter Island, where I’ll be this Fourth of July.  I recently became a US Citizen and am so grateful I came here, with $600 and a backpack—where else could I have started off, with only that (and a dream)?

Stars and stripes are classic design elements and stars are almost required wear in the Taylor household —- (my favorite striped top of the summer is here.)

Happy Fourth of July!

With Glittering Eyes: Paris and London

I recently took an inspirational trip to Paris and fell in love with the beauty of the city all over again:  The Musee d’Orsay takes my breath away, there are always exciting new artists to discover in museums (this time I learned of Armand Berton and Francois Petrovich) and found myself always looking up with wonder:  the blue ceiling with gold stars at St. Germain Des Pres, and the beautiful ship chandelier at my favorite shop in Paris, Astier de Villate.  Everytime I go to Paris I find something new, and this time it was this lovely candy store, Meert.

London always provides a creative spark and this time I went with a purpose … to see the David Bowie Exhibition at the V & A Museum, which raised the bar on museum exhibitions and literally left me breathless, I thought I would faint… the man is a genius! I also managed to shop, of course, and visited one of my favorite stores, Dover Street Market.

Inspiration: Debbie Harry
I love the rock and roll downtown style of New York in the early 80’s…I just love the anarchy of the time, and I imagined my Fall 2013 girl coming home late at night from a rock concert: feminine, with an urban edge,  maybe her boyfriend’s jacket around her shoulders.  There’s a little bit of Debbie Harry in every collection I do, probably because as a girl I stared at this Autoamerican cover for hours…

Frances Ha

Really enjoyed Frances Ha, a film directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Greta Gerwig. It seemed tailor-made for me as it was filmed in New York, the main theme is female friendship, the lead character is a dancer and “Modern Love” by David Bowie is even in it. I loved Greta Gerwig, who stars as Frances- even more so after listening to this NPR interview:

Fresh Air

Weekends away to escape the city hustle are necessary for the creative mind and soul … here are some favorites of fashion industry insiders:

1 — Stone Barns Center, New York:  Rebecca and family love to spend time in nature and this oasis upstate is a favorite… there is an organic farm, beekeepers, and big, beautiful pigs.

2 — Madrona Manor, Sonoma, California.  Karla Martinez, Fashion Market and Accessories Director at W Magazine, is looking forward to a wedding at this relaxing, peaceful getaway.  ”I can’t wait to try the restaurant at Hotel Healdsburg:  Dry Creek Kitchen.”

3— Allegany State Park, Western New York. “ It’s about an 8 hour drive from NYC, and well worth it with scenic overlooks, hiking grounds, wildlife, lakes to fish in….and no cell phone reception! It’s a total weekend to get away and unplug….and practice your board game skills”  Sarah Pillai, Teen Vogue Assistant Fashion Editor.

About Lace

Lace is in almost all of my collections and it’s a lovely material to work with.  I learned how to work with it from my mother, I wear it often, and my daughters love to wear it too:   it’s traditionally feminine yet I love combining it with unexpected fabrics, as in the lace and leather dress from our upcoming Fall collection.  A lace dress is a great option for summer weddings and you can give it some edge with metal hardware  accessories.

One kind of lace I’m particularly interested in is Guipure lace —- one of the earliest forms of lace which incorporates netting and contains an embossed pattern.  Be on the lookout for some beautiful pieces coming soon …

Lace is universally appreciated and can be considered an art form:  I have visited a lace museum in Brussels and once read a moving article about a school in Italy I hope to visit one day, La Scuola dei Corsi Merletti.  (Click on that link for a lovely video!)

A Taste of Summer
Can’t beat a cool drink when the weather’s warm and this one from Tacombi, in NYC’s Nolita neighborhood, hits the spot.  (And it has fruit, so it’s healthy!)  Good for the soul,  perfect for an afternoon shopping break or a hot summer night with friends.  Chef Luis Aguilar from Tacombi is sweet to share the recipe:
Sparkling Sangria
1oz apple
1oz pineapple
1oz orange
5oz ice
8oz sparkling white wine (La Cetto)
2oz watermelon juice
In a 16oz glass, in this order, add ice + fruit + sparkling wine + watermelon juice.  Stir. Enjoy!
And, if you’re heading out to Montauk, stop by their sister restaurant La Brisa, opening this weekend…

Love Interests

Rebecca’s husband, artist Wayne Pate, created the Poppy Tote bag.  His inspiration: “Besides spring the drawing of poppies embodies those little magical moments that life gives you for free. The poppies remind me of one of those in the South of France where there is a endless sea of them everywhere you look.”  He’s obsessed with Paris turn-of-the-century, 20’s and 30’s art scene and Jean Desbordes is his style icon.  Wayne’s instagram is a generous look into his creative mind.

The Poppy Tote is free with a purchase of $350 or more, while supplies last.
