J’Adore: The Enchanted Garden Top

My favorite top from the Summer 2014 collection would have to be the Enchanted Garden Top. It’s the epitome of luxury casual —- a lovely print, constructed with a beautiful fabric, and I can wear with it as easily with a pair of work pants as a lace skirt. (Love it with a red lip, as it complements the deeper red color of the floral print.) We styled it buttoned-up on the runway for a more fashion-forward look, but it’s nice to wear with the collar open as well, to feel a bit sexier and more free-spirited.

Jean Paul Gaultier
If you’re in London, you must see the Jean-Paul Gaultier exhibition at the Barbican! I saw the show last fall at the Brooklyn Museum and was amazed.   I’ve always admired Gaultier and his designs, and the show is beautifully-executed reminder of his creativity, wit and influence.

Style and Grace

I am a huge Catherine Middleton fan and am overjoyed to see the Duchess in a tweed suit I designed —- wearing it in my home town of Wellington, New Zealand no less! I think she’s beautiful, she is doing an amazing job and I love Prince William and precious Prince George too! I love this iconic photo, with the Duchess wearing Princess Diana’s ring … I’m tearing up!

When I was a little girl, I remember going to see Princess Diana come to New Zealand with baby Prince William. We lined the streets to see her, it was such a grand moment. And so began my love affair with the royal family, and seeing the Duchess in my clothes is a dream coming true.

A Special Night: Bachmann Strauss
One of the benefits of having a store is that there is a large space to throw parties, and one of the benefits to throwing parties is to raise money for a great cause!   This Thursday, April 10th from 6-9pm, our Meatpacking boutique will be hosting a benefit for the Bachmann Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson’s Foundation co-hosted by Allison Hersh London.  20% of the night’s proceeds will benefit this cause.  We’ve co-hosted several events with Bachman Strauss and the parties are always a lot of fun and Allison herself is such an inspiration.    I’ll be there, as will the designers of Vale Jewelry, the lovely Eva and Ava Bai, showing exclusive, exquisite pieces, and we promise surprises…  Please join us!

J’Adore: The Lace Sweatshirt

It’s starting to feel like spring in NYC (finally!) and my favorite item from the new collection - The Lace Sweatshirt - is taking a starring role in my spring wardrobe. I love how the melange grey feels light and feminine, and I wear it oversized for extra comfort- although some of the girls in the office prefer a more fitted look. I sometimes wear it over a striped top and let the stripes show through the lace insets for extra interest, and I love it with the Lace Skirt from the runway. It’s sport-inspired modern luxury and beyond trend, I can see myself wearing this for years to come!

Carrie Schneider: Reading Women

At the latest Armory Show in NYC I was delighted by a series of portraits by Carrie Schneider, Reading Women. From the artist:

To create Reading Women, I asked 70 female friends - mostly artists, writers and musicians - to each sit while reading a book of her choice, written by a female author, in her own home or studio for the duration of two hours using side-by-side photographic and video cameras. There is something rare about the depth of concentration experienced while reading, and it’s this moment I’m after: when the sitter loses awareness of the camera - and any semblance of a pose - forgetting her cultural performance.

The Uncommon Reader

My friend Robbie gave me The Uncommon Reader by Allan Bennett as a gift and I love to gift it as well. It’s a delightful novella that poses a scenario: Queen Elizabeth, at the age of 70, suddenly becomes a voracious reader. She starts reading out of duty, then finds duty turns to curiosity, and curiosity to pleasure:
“What she was finding also was how one book led to another, doors kept opening wherever she turned and the days weren’t long enough for the reading she wanted to do.”

Alan Bennett’s writing is such a joy to read, The Uncommon Reader is a witty tale of the subversive pleasures of reading. Treat yourself to this little treasure of a book!
