White Linen

Out on date night at the refined, cozy Crosby Street Hotel I ordered this cocktail - White Linen - and was delighted.   A refreshing taste and the froth is fun. It’s something special.   The ingredients are: Hendricks gin, cucumber, egg white, lemon juice, sugar, cracked black pepper.

Site we love:  Letters of Note
It’s a wonderful web site, now also a new book:  Letters of Note gathers fascinating personal correspondence from well-known people. I love the beauty of an elegant letter composed from the heart, written, typed and mailed (not emailed! or tweeted!  or blogged, for that matter!) But it can be faxed —- as my husband sent me a series of clever faxes when we were dating which I still have.

Included:  a humble, grateful letter written by Albert Camus, after winning the Nobel Prize, to an old teacher; a deliriously, intensely passionate love letter from Henry Miller to Anais Nin; and my favorite— this charming, inspiring letter of advice from Kurt Vonnegut to a class of high school students.

On The Street: Bushwick

I’m always inspired by street style and the way people express their individuality so I really loved this feature in The New York Times about some residents of Bushwick, an artsy, still-rough-around-the-edges neighborhood in Brooklyn. We shot a short film there not long and I could feel the potential creative energy in this raw urban landscape, and the graffiti art - wonderful!
This is a beautiful weekend to explore the neighborhood as the local artists display their work in the Bushwick Open Studios - never know what you might find.

Site We Love: Glutton For Life

Writer/reader/creative consultant/city mouse/country mouse Laura Silverman has a wonderful blog about embracing all of life’s goodness—— as she puts it, she loves:

sharing food with friends • reading while I eat • eating what I’ve grown • foraging in the wild • roaring fires in winter • swaying hammocks in summer • turning over a new leaf • puns, tongue-twisters & verbal vollies • pickles, cheese, bourbon & caramel • cooking for loved ones • linen sheets • food markets in foreign countries • movies • a good hike • ferns, peonies & scented geraniums • textiles • vetiver, sandalwood & myrrh • chiles, ginger & salt • (almost) anything smoked • yoga • picnics, cookouts & camping • Baroque music • flea markets & junk shops • exotic ingredients • afternoon naps • dinner parties • a well-packed suitcase • a bargain • waterfalls • poetry

I find it inspiring and informative, with innovative recipes and simple-pleasures done right, such as how to boil the perfect egg.  I’m also anxious to try the Grilled Pineapple Salsa (shown in the photo above) one summer weekend.

Something New

Who wants to see the exhibition Wedding Dresses 1775-2014 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London? I do!  I love wedding dresses, although as a little girl I DID ruin my mum’s wedding dress when I was playing dressup with my sister, got makeup on it, then put it in a tub full of bleach to try and clean … something I still feel bad about to this day.  (My mum has somewhat forgiven me, and has designed the most beautiful wedding dresses for my daughters’ dolls.)   I have been inspired by Madonna in a wedding dress - what teenage girl wasn’t? -  and loved donning a real-life one in my real-life wedding.  To all the future brides out there, enjoy every minute of the day and every detail of your dress - and then, keep it in a safe place away from the kids.

The Doll

I recently finished “The Doll” a collection of short stories by Daphne Du Maurier, one of my favorite writers. (I was named after Rebecca, the heroine of one of her novels, by the way). It’s a subversive read - the title story is about a woman’s obsession with a male sex doll- and the other tales range from heartbreaking to bittersweet, with some humor thrown in.

In general I love to read from women authors of the early 1900’s as it wasn’t a wonderful time for women, very repressed, not a lot of freedom —- their works are filled with such imagination so their writing is like a portal into the mind of women of the time.

Marco’s

For a great Brooklyn dining experience, I’d recommend Marco’s in Prospect Heights — it’s rustic yet refined and if the weather holds out, there is a lovely patio.  It is from the same owners as Franny’s one of my favorite restaurants!
