Love Interests

Rebecca’s husband, artist Wayne Pate, created the Poppy Tote bag.  His inspiration: “Besides spring the drawing of poppies embodies those little magical moments that life gives you for free. The poppies remind me of one of those in the South of France where there is a endless sea of them everywhere you look.”  He’s obsessed with Paris turn-of-the-century, 20’s and 30’s art scene and Jean Desbordes is his style icon.  Wayne’s instagram is a generous look into his creative mind.

The Poppy Tote is free with a purchase of $350 or more, while supplies last.

Happy Mother’s Day
My mother Patricia comes to New York to help with every fashion show, which is appropriate because she was such a huge influence on my style —- a lot of the feminine details in my clothes, such as eyelet lace, pintucks - I learned from her.  She made most of my family’s clothing (including the jumbo gingham dress my sister and I are wearing above) She’s a homemaker — in the very best sense of that wonderful word.  After all, a home is what we need the most.
She singlehandedly renovated our house including tearing down walls.  And with such style—we were the classic 70’s style with the fondue set, macrame, sheepskin rugs— until the 80’s when it changed to the smoky glass coffee table and flotaki rugs.  My mother never says that something can’t be done — she’s always positive and hardworking and loves to create.

With Glittering Eyes
Last night I was completely enchanted by the New York City Ballet Spring Gala. My favorite performance of the night was Glass Pieces… riveting music, a beautiful colour story, and creative choreography which really showcased the fantastic male dancers.  —costumes by Ben Benson, music by Phillip Glass, choreography by Jerome Robbins.
I’ve been taking advantage of the culture of NYC and find it’s always, endlessly, fascinating. There is an interesting performance art piece with an intriguing horror story vibe: Sleep No More. The less said about it the better as it’s really something to be experienced first hand…

Sparkle on the Way

I’ve always been a hands-on designer and the more I get my hands on something, the more likely a garment with sparkles will be the final result … I love the technique and craftsmanship behind embellishment and am always inspired working with Vien, our embroidery designer.  Not a detail goes unnoticed in these upcoming collections:  a bodice shines in our Black Tie collection, sparkles are added to a print and chainmail to a tee from Fall 2013.

Top of the Lake

I’m so looking forward to the season finale of Top of the Lake, a beautifully haunting detective story directed by Jane Campion and shot in my homeland, New Zealand. Elizabeth Moss and Holly Hunter are wonderful - all the characters are so richly portrayed. Season finale is Monday so I’d recommend catching up on it this weekend and tuning in to see how it ends…

Miami Nice

Visiting Miami for the first time and loving it! So nice to be near the ocean and enjoying some leisure time. I’m here for an event at the Saks store in Dadeland Mall (really enjoyed meeting the Saks team, local bloggers and shoppers) and staying at the Delano has allowed for a nice dose of calm, just what a fashion designer needs now and then…

In The Lab: Growing Crystals

Growing up in New Zealand, I learned to be very crafty because I had to: if I wanted a pair of red patent leather pumps, the only way I’d get them would be by painting one of my pair with red nail polish. I’ve always found crystals to be beautiful and almost magical and I was reading a book about mining and our head designer Kathleen came across this artist who transforms materials by growing crystals: we decided to try it with this clutch.

In the Lab: Ombre´
Coming up for summer: some fantastic silk ombre´ pieces. For these, we got our hands wet, and blue.  In our dye room we created samples using 3 spray bottles: a dark blue dye, a medium diluted blue, and clear water; sprayed it on the fabric and let it run off.   I love silk ombre´for summer … it’s a beautiful, feminine, more refined version of tie-dye.
